Se hela listan på creatingmycambridge.com 2021-04-08 · Four-year-old Anna Maria Vassa, who died in 1797, was the orphaned daughter of a Cambridgeshire woman and Olaudah Equiano, a former slave and sailor who bought his freedom. Sadly, his eldest daughter Anna Maria Vassa, died just a few months after Equiano on 21st July 1797 aged just four years and is buried at St. Andrew's Church, Chesterton, Cambridge where there is a commemorative plaque in her memory. Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa was living in what is now Nigeria when he was captured from his village at the age of 11 and sold into slavery. He wastaken to Virginia as a slave. He was eventually sold to a ship’s captain and travelled widely. After 16 years as a slave he managed to save enough money to buy his freedom. Equiano wrote his auto-biography ‘The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African, Written by Himself‘ and tirelessly campaigned to end slavery.
